With a lot to play for and little time to prepare, Gibson has to keep things simple for the next few weeks. “My goal is to field a team that plays fundamentally sound, and plays their best until the whistle blows every play they are on the field. If we do that, we are winners no matter what happens,” stated Gibson.
With so much to learn, Gibson is trying to instill discipline into a star studded team.
Senior Zach Jackson is a member of the elite Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen. Fred “Snap” Moore is being courted by a few major colleges. Gibson said, “We install discipline team-wide. We will not let ego infiltrate our teamwork.” Discipline and teamwork is something Gibson has learned to deal with in tougher situations other than football. He has served our country in two wars, Desert Storm and Kuwait as part of the US Army and Air National Guard respectively.
Gibson came from J.Z. George to Heidelberg. He was head coach at Greenwood for three years, and also assisted at other schools including Provine. Even though a tough task confronts the Oilers in 2010 to learn to gel as a team, there is talent available. “Zach is a team player. He works harder than anyone. Plus, he is an outstanding player. Victor Cooley and Snap (Fred Moore) could be special,” noted Gibson.
Speaking of Dandy Dozens, the Oilers will have to face Raleigh’s Dandy Dozen member, Donte Moncrief. There will not be many times in Jasper County history where you can watch two Dandy Dozen members play on the same field. That ought to make a lot of curious football fans take the trip up Highway 528. Oiler fans will be loud and proud on Friday night.
