Stringer Attendance Center teacher Michelle Green has been named this year’s Teacher of the Year for the West Jasper School District.
Green has been with Stringer for 19 years. She teaches several math courses, from seventh grade math to AP Calculus. She also sponsors the Beta Club, Cheerleaders, Student Council, Math and Science Teams and the senior class.
She is the math chair for the district, staff development coordinator and trainer for the district and mentor teacher.
This year, Green sponsored the Stringer Math Team as they took second place at the Jones County Junior College Math Bowl. After losing one round at the beginning of the competition, Green’s well-trained students won more rounds than any other team at the competition. Two of the students were in the top three scoring players in the bowl, including Zach Brown who scored the highest.
Green was quick to pass any credit on to her students for their accomplishments. After the Math Bowl success, Green said, “The money that we won was definetly nice, but the fact that our small, little school came in second place out of 21 schools with many of the schools being larger than us almost makes us feel like we won the competition, especially with two out of the top three students being our students... I could not be more proud of these students if they were my own.”
This is not the first year Green has been noticed for her success with students. In fact, it is her fourth year to receive this honor with the district. In 2005, she was a Mississippi finalist for Teacher of the Year.
Her students have also acknowledged her as a great teacher. She has been named Star Teacher five times. This honor is given by the Star Student, or the senior who receives the highest ACT score and highest 4-year scholastic average. The Star Teacher is the one teacher that the Star Student feels made the greatest contribution to their scholastic success.
Green is married to Rusty Green. They have three daughters, Carley, Kelsey and Katelyn.
