The Bay Springs mayor, aldermen and other city officials met at the City Hall on July 5 at 7 p.m. The meeting was opened by Mayor J.E. Smith and Sonny Houston, city attorney, gave the invocation. The meeting began with personal appearances.
Lela Bryan and Suzanne Sumrall with the Committee to Preserve and Revitalize, CPR, gave an update on a park bench and trash receptacle idea brought up at the Bay Springs Moving Forward town hall meeting. Businesses throughout the city could purchase a bench and a trash receptacle and place on their property. Bryan stated that the CPR committee is researching benches and receptacles in order to choose a design to recommend to the city businesses. Bryan and Sumrall will travel to Prison Industries in Jackson to look at different styles.
Robin Mackinaw and Rhonda Parker with the Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Foundation spoke to the group about events to be held during the month of September in recognition of National Childhood Cancer Month. The group is soliciting support and contributions from local businesses and groups. They will speak to the board again when more details are available.
A new ordinance for parking at Neco parking lot has been created. The city will continue to allow parking there but only in certain areas. Each year, the city incurs costs having to repave the parking lot because of the damage done by large trucks parking there. The changes made will save the city money. The new ordinance will be published for public knowledge.
After lengthy discussion, the aldermen voted to apply for funding under the Energy Grant Program. This grant will allow fixtures in multiple city buildings to be replaced with energy efficient bulbs at no cost to the city.
The aldermen voted to allow The Production Place to use the city hall on Mondays for play rehearsal. The Production Place is a group of children who will perform plays during the year.
